Rabbit Craft Community

Hi, Just here to tell you today about a page on Facebook called "Rabbit Craft Community" where you can check out the crafts of other rabbit lovers where there is stuff for bunnies such as rabbit toys, treats, etc.  Or you can find rabbit themed items such as jewelry, clothing, art, soap, and a variety of other things created by artists and crafters.

This is a great way to support fellow bunny lovers, local artisans and help stimulate the economy in a direct to the artist way.  Also, you will find unique gifts for yourself, family, friends and especially the bunnies that you won't find in a box store or chain store!

You can also usually communicate directly with the maker of the merchandise in most cases, which is something you can't do in a big chain or box store. You can ask questions, often ask for custom work or make suggestions.

We also want crafters and artists of rabbit related things to join us. Please just "like" the page, share away and we will repost!  It's also a great way to share events, contests, etc. you might be holding or be at.

We are interested in rescues or other non-profit rabbit organizations sharing their events,  craft auctions, stores, contests, etc.  We will repost and tweet as well!

Please stop by, "like" us, look around and share away as well! You can find Rabbit Craft Community by clicking right here!

New Group Helps with Head Tilt in Rabbits

Hi there,

Just wanted to share about a closed (for your privacy) group we started on Facebook that's called Help for Head Tilt Hoppers. It's been having a lot of interaction with lots of different people who've either had bunnies with head tilt or those going through it seeking answers or sharing what's going on. They are also sharing what helps with all different aspects, as well as success stories. It's been a very positive group.

With my first head tilt bun, Ashes, I felt so helpless and scared. It was with lots of my own research, trial and error and a great second opinion from another vet that he recovered with some minor residual issues, but was a happy bunny.  The other thing that was a major help was help from others in forums such as Etherbun, which has existed before the days of Facebook. People were great.  Head tilt isn't something most people would know about, such as a next door neighbor, who otherwise could perhaps give advice on a pet dog or cat. Rabbits are gaining popularity, but still are surprising people as being a house pet when they find out.

If you have or are dealing with head tilt in a rabbit, please join us. You can find us by clicking on the groups name here: Help for Headtilt Hoppers . Please share us with others. It's free. All you need to be is a member of Facebook.

CT Chapter of Bunnies in Baskets Therapy Rabbits Starting!

Just wanted to share the excitement of how we are starting a chapter of Bunnies in Baskets, which is an organization that certifies and educates Therapy Bunnies. They are based in Portland, Oregon. Here I am sharing some background in an interview I did with their founder and organizer, Sarah Baran. I even interviewed one of their graduates, a therapy rabbit named Reggie Pani, whose interview is right here.

You will be seeing posts as we go through our organizing and set up. Bunnies in Baskets is a great organization, which caters to the needs of rabbits as visiting therapy animals getting certified and training/educating their owners as well.

I have done lots of visiting over the years, without any formal certification, because I owned bunnies and became totally enamored of them when one "seduced" my heart into his as a pet in a nursing home I worked at.  He followed me everywhere.

I then brought home a bunny, that was donated to the nursing home. From that day, I was hooked.  That bunny and others I owned (or they owned me) did lots of visits in lots of ways, sharing their magical love,  in lots of places which give me lots of stories to tell.

Some places want  "certified therapy animals" and are also hesitant to take rabbits in because they don't know anything about them and that makes them a bit nervous. With that in mind, we want to share the bunny magic with certification from people that know rabbits and can educate well. Some of this can go way beyond the visiting therapeutically, but can help educate people on how wonderful these companion animals are.

So, please stay tuned as the Connecticut Chapter of Bunnies in Baskets gets off the ground and you can see how we develop. Hopefully, by chronicling this, we can help provide others in other places with some information that might be helpful in starting their own chapter!

Thanks for stopping by!

Sad Georgie and Fluffy Update

It's been a while since I posted. I was devastated at the loss of poor Georgie and Fluffy bunnies, who are the bunnies I last wrote about in here, with great hopes of their recovery. They passed within a week of a each other and I couldn't stop crying when I thought of them or saw their photos.

I'm sorry that I didn't share it. I just didn't have the strength at the time. I still look at them in their photos this few months later and feel sad. Occasionally I'm looking for them or slip and call out one of their names and then catch myself.

This is going to be a short post, but I wanted to get this out there before I wrote any new posts.  Thanks for everyone's support in trying to help them get better and in helping my own heart. I send you each a loving hug of appreciation.

Georgie and Fluffy: An Update on E.Cunniculi

First of all, I'd like to truly express appreciation to those who helped Fluffy out with his medical bills.  It has helped make a difference in his being alive!
Fluffy after a butt bath

Since the time of my last post (click here), Fluffy has been going through ups and downs, but has been slowly improving.  A short time after the last post, my other rabbit Georgie had started to demonstrate symptoms different, but similar to those of Fluffy.

Georgie is about six years old, but had been healthy up until this time except for a front paw which was either injured and didn't heal correctly or has some type of bone condition which caused a lower bone to not connect correctly with the rest of his bones/joints. He seems to get a long fine and the vet was not concerned with it after taking xrays. He, now though, has been since diagnosed with e.cuniculi along with Fluffy.  Fluffy was diagnosed with having kidney issues at first, but the e.c. diagnosis came with follow-up.

Georgie, less robust, and just staring while leaning on cage

Georgie is showing interest in food (cage closed so I don't distract him)

Georgie has demonstrated more issues with stargazing, head sway and an unsteady gait. Fluffy has been dealing with balance issues, kidney issues and some paralysis, as well as wasting away.

Fluffy in healthier days

The boys have been receiving treatment with fenbendazole and ivermectin. There has been some very slow improvement, but it's taking time. They both have been needing butt baths, extra care and attention. They also have been lots of loving attention to encourage having a will to live, to keep them active and interested in life and eating.  They are generally seem to respond well when they get lots of attention.

Sadly, but fortunately (in a way of gaining experience to help these pals), I've had experience in dealing with e.cuniculi along time ago. I wouldn't wish it on anyone or any anipal whatsoever. I lost one rabbit to e.cunniculi because the vet at the time wouldn't treat that rabbit until the test came back. The rabbit died because treatment was started way too late. I learned a lot from the loss of my poor Thumper, who suffered so much. I was devastated. I swore this would never happen to any of my bunnies again. I have better vets and am much more aggressive about getting treatment.
A thin Fluffy showing some interest in sliced (easier to nibble) carrots

The more recent photos of Fluffy and Georgie show them sick. I took pictures with a camera phone so as not to disturb them with noises my camera makes or to startle them with a flash.  Fluffy and Georgie both now (since after the photos were taken) have fleece blankies they lie on or spend most of their time on for their comfort and to help with urine scald.  There have times that especially Fluffy scared me with where he looked near death, but with the answering of many prayers, he keeps on fighting. I will share more photos as they improve.

It's hard to tell how thin Fluffy is because of his Angora fur. One thing people should always do is feel their bunny's body to see if they are bony, losing weight, and for any abnormalities in general on a regular basis. Even for short hair rabbits, one can't always tell by looking if there are changes!

The 20% sale for helping with Fluffy's and Georgie's medical bills is going on at Bunny Burrow Boutique.. By using the code: BUNNY20 at checkout, 20% will be taken off your entire order.

Thank you everyone for your support. Any support you can make with a purchase at Bunny Burrow Boutique would be greatly appreciated. I am not looking for donations, but rather to obtain funds through sales at Bunny Burrow Boutique to help pay for my sweet boys' medical bills.

Thank you.

Two New Family Members

Hello there!

Recently we added two new family members who we would quickly like to introduce.

The photos are not the greatest, but they are the first taken by request of some Facebook friends. More will come in the future.

They came from a none rabbit oriented municipal animal shelter in my hometown.  People recently told me about them, one who  who works at the shelter.

One sweetie had to be given up when her family lost their home in hurricane Sandy. That must have been so hard for them to go through and then to also have to make the choice of having to give up their sweet beloved pet. She doesn't have an official name yet. She is a very sweet six year old lionhead!  She has striking blue eyes, sadly with red pupils in the photos! She looks so nervous here, but she hadn't been with us even an hour. Suggestions are always welcome in the comments below!

The other is one they found "running around the streets".  The phrase is fitting because she seems fairly young, energetic and rascally!  I'm glad they caught her because she is also very social and affectionate, but hard to keep within safety at time. It's easy to see how she may have escaped a hutch. I hope and pray that she wasn't dumped. I'm also glad that she won't have to be in a hutch again! The photos here make her look washed out. She is much more energetic, younger and orangey reddish looking.  Her name is Ginger. That name came easy.

I will share more on them in the near future!

Thanks for stopping by!

The Earthern Cavy

If you are like me, you are probably looking for great gifts for the holidays. I wanted to share a special online shop with you where you can find special handmade ceramic and pottery goods as well as have great animal portraits done also! For the record, I don't get anything in any way for writing this post.

This shop is owned and operated by a great fur pal lover and slave (charitably allowed to be called their owner by her real furry owners) named Sarah Alderete.  Her work is high quality and consistently beautiful. I have heard many people repeatedly talk about her wonderful work and show off pieces she has done for them. I will post a few photos here of some of her work, but check out her shop to get a better feel.

Sarah, herself, shares this with us:
"The Earthen Cavy is a sole-proprietorship, based just outside of Spokane, Washington. The tiny art business specializes is creating hand-made pottery out of terracotta and whiteware that contains carvings or illustrations of animals. Fine drawings and watercolor paintings are also offered to its customers. Commissions are almost always open, and the proprietor, Sarah Alderete, loves to depict our animal friends in a variety of ways. Her online store is located at: http://www.etsy.com/shop/theguineapotter

The Earthern Cavy's Facebook page is at this link: https://www.facebook.com/EarthenCavy

Daily Breakfast for several of her furbabies!
On the Facebook page you can see much better sampling of Sarah's work and people's comments on it.

Sarah is also the slave of several cavies, rabbits and a cat (some which I show below)! Also, she is an animal rights activist who cares much about the welfare of all animals.

Do You Call Your Bunnies By Their Given Name?

Do you call your bunnies by their given name? Do you have a nickname for your bunny or bunnies? Which name do you use the most?

Unintentionally, I've started calling some bunnies by different names. For example, I had a German Angora rabbit I named Fritz.  I think I was trying to remember the German word my grandmother used for boy, when it hit me: bub (pronounced by my grandmother as: boobp). Then I started doing squeaky, cutesy bunny voices to him and called him my little bub (boobp). He, for some reason, seemed to really react positively to it and he became: "My Boopy" or just "Boopy".
Butterscotch the English Lop

A different bunny, a big Enlish Lop, named Butterscotch (not the Butterscotch we presently have) became ButterBumble, BumbleHead and sometimes just Butter.  It's silly.

A certain Little White Bunny at age 8 or 9

One bunny, an albino dwarf, was a sweet frisky little guy who lived a very long life and only recently just passed away.  He was a bunny we could not think of a name for. For the life of us, we tried and tried. Nothing seemed fitting. So for several weeks we discussed him descriptively.  He was "The Little White Bunny".  Not sure why, with so many good names out there, we couldn't think of any.  He just decided to take the name "Little White Bunny" because that's what we always called him when talking about him, caring for him, feeding or petting him. That's what he became because he just started responding to it. It just became too late for any other name. We started calling him LWB in conversation because we felt a bit embarrassed over that name. But for 11 years, he chose Little White Bunny and always, always answered to it!

We do have other bunny nicknames, but I think those will keep for another day. Please share what your bunny's nicknames are or any great stories! Please share in the comments below!

Is Butterscotch Bunny Deaf?

Butterscotch Bunny has been in my thoughts and under my observation lately. I'm not quite sure what to think.  He and his sweetheart Jamie, a rescued Harlequin, are always cuddling and grooming. The thing is he seems to just be uninterested in other things. He lies there a lot and doesn't seem responsive to us, unlike when before he was neutered, he was overly attentive to us because his hormones seemed to surge even more than other unneutered male rabbits (like in the Buzzing Bunny video below).  I had been thinking that perhaps he was depressed or that perhaps he was too demanding of Jamie because she is extremely affectionate making Butterscotch become spoiled. But that just doesn't seem to be it.

I watched more and more.  Butterscotch seems like he might be deaf. He doesn't respond to his name or other things that seem to influence other bunnies to respond. What I think happens is that he responds to Jamie's cues. When she responds to us, he responds to her! He seems to be dependent on her.

I've been doing some "tests" of my own to see how responsive he is to noises and things that startle bunnies. I look to see if he responds on his own or if he responds to Jamie. They are inseparable, which I am glad of, especially if he is deaf. I have been blowing loud whistles, clapping my hands loud, shaking the large metal cup (with some pellets in it) that we use to give them pellets, crinkling the bag of hay- noises the bunnies respond to before they can smell the pellets and hay.  They only respond to veggie smells, so there aren't any noises from their veggies or greens that he would respond to that I know of.

I'm going to observe him more.  Butterscotch is a sweet rabbit in his own independent way and I want him to have a full life.  I am so happy he has Jamie, but if he is deaf, I want to learn how to make his life more fulfilling. What is good is that he has Jamie to help be his ears for now or while they are together, which I hope and pray is a long time!

Does anyone out there have a deaf bunny or one that is hard of hearing? Please let me know. Please share here in the comments. As I learn more, I will share it here. Anything you can share would not only be helpful to Butterscotch, but anyone else who reads these who might be dealing with something similar.

Thanks for stopping by and hopefully sharing! Would truly love to hear what you think or if you care to share any experiences!
