The winner will be chosen from a random drawing of the names of those who entered.

You must also pay attention and respond to the announcement of the winner on Facebook  on the pages you entered on to acknowledge winning. I'd like for these to get to the winner by Christmas if they would like to have them for that option.

The earrings are a silver charm of a rabbit silhouette jumping in front of a crescent moon! I'm sure bunnies having an easier time jumping over the moon than a cow!  They are from the Etsy shop Bunny Burrow Boutique.

The Earthern Cavy

If you are like me, you are probably looking for great gifts for the holidays. I wanted to share a special online shop with you where you can find special handmade ceramic and pottery goods as well as have great animal portraits done also! For the record, I don't get anything in any way for writing this post.

This shop is owned and operated by a great fur pal lover and slave (charitably allowed to be called their owner by her real furry owners) named Sarah Alderete.  Her work is high quality and consistently beautiful. I have heard many people repeatedly talk about her wonderful work and show off pieces she has done for them. I will post a few photos here of some of her work, but check out her shop to get a better feel.

Sarah, herself, shares this with us:
"The Earthen Cavy is a sole-proprietorship, based just outside of Spokane, Washington. The tiny art business specializes is creating hand-made pottery out of terracotta and whiteware that contains carvings or illustrations of animals. Fine drawings and watercolor paintings are also offered to its customers. Commissions are almost always open, and the proprietor, Sarah Alderete, loves to depict our animal friends in a variety of ways. Her online store is located at: http://www.etsy.com/shop/theguineapotter

The Earthern Cavy's Facebook page is at this link: https://www.facebook.com/EarthenCavy

Daily Breakfast for several of her furbabies!
On the Facebook page you can see much better sampling of Sarah's work and people's comments on it.

Sarah is also the slave of several cavies, rabbits and a cat (some which I show below)! Also, she is an animal rights activist who cares much about the welfare of all animals.

Do You Call Your Bunnies By Their Given Name?

Do you call your bunnies by their given name? Do you have a nickname for your bunny or bunnies? Which name do you use the most?

Unintentionally, I've started calling some bunnies by different names. For example, I had a German Angora rabbit I named Fritz.  I think I was trying to remember the German word my grandmother used for boy, when it hit me: bub (pronounced by my grandmother as: boobp). Then I started doing squeaky, cutesy bunny voices to him and called him my little bub (boobp). He, for some reason, seemed to really react positively to it and he became: "My Boopy" or just "Boopy".
Butterscotch the English Lop

A different bunny, a big Enlish Lop, named Butterscotch (not the Butterscotch we presently have) became ButterBumble, BumbleHead and sometimes just Butter.  It's silly.

A certain Little White Bunny at age 8 or 9

One bunny, an albino dwarf, was a sweet frisky little guy who lived a very long life and only recently just passed away.  He was a bunny we could not think of a name for. For the life of us, we tried and tried. Nothing seemed fitting. So for several weeks we discussed him descriptively.  He was "The Little White Bunny".  Not sure why, with so many good names out there, we couldn't think of any.  He just decided to take the name "Little White Bunny" because that's what we always called him when talking about him, caring for him, feeding or petting him. That's what he became because he just started responding to it. It just became too late for any other name. We started calling him LWB in conversation because we felt a bit embarrassed over that name. But for 11 years, he chose Little White Bunny and always, always answered to it!

We do have other bunny nicknames, but I think those will keep for another day. Please share what your bunny's nicknames are or any great stories! Please share in the comments below!

Is Butterscotch Bunny Deaf?

Butterscotch Bunny has been in my thoughts and under my observation lately. I'm not quite sure what to think.  He and his sweetheart Jamie, a rescued Harlequin, are always cuddling and grooming. The thing is he seems to just be uninterested in other things. He lies there a lot and doesn't seem responsive to us, unlike when before he was neutered, he was overly attentive to us because his hormones seemed to surge even more than other unneutered male rabbits (like in the Buzzing Bunny video below).  I had been thinking that perhaps he was depressed or that perhaps he was too demanding of Jamie because she is extremely affectionate making Butterscotch become spoiled. But that just doesn't seem to be it.

I watched more and more.  Butterscotch seems like he might be deaf. He doesn't respond to his name or other things that seem to influence other bunnies to respond. What I think happens is that he responds to Jamie's cues. When she responds to us, he responds to her! He seems to be dependent on her.

I've been doing some "tests" of my own to see how responsive he is to noises and things that startle bunnies. I look to see if he responds on his own or if he responds to Jamie. They are inseparable, which I am glad of, especially if he is deaf. I have been blowing loud whistles, clapping my hands loud, shaking the large metal cup (with some pellets in it) that we use to give them pellets, crinkling the bag of hay- noises the bunnies respond to before they can smell the pellets and hay.  They only respond to veggie smells, so there aren't any noises from their veggies or greens that he would respond to that I know of.

I'm going to observe him more.  Butterscotch is a sweet rabbit in his own independent way and I want him to have a full life.  I am so happy he has Jamie, but if he is deaf, I want to learn how to make his life more fulfilling. What is good is that he has Jamie to help be his ears for now or while they are together, which I hope and pray is a long time!

Does anyone out there have a deaf bunny or one that is hard of hearing? Please let me know. Please share here in the comments. As I learn more, I will share it here. Anything you can share would not only be helpful to Butterscotch, but anyone else who reads these who might be dealing with something similar.

Thanks for stopping by and hopefully sharing! Would truly love to hear what you think or if you care to share any experiences!

Bunny Burrow Boutique Helps Support Trinket's Memorial Rabbit Sanctuary

Hi There,
Hoping you had a Bunderful Thanksgiving! Just here to share a special announcement with all you bun lovers!

For each item purchased made at the Bunny Burrow Boutique on Etsy  from today (Nov. 23rd, 2012) until New Year's Eve (Dec. 31st, 2012), one U.S. dollar will be given to Trinket's Memorial Rabbit Sanctuary.

In other words, if you buy 3 items during the dates above, then $3.00 will be given to Trinket's Memorial Rabbit Sanctuary in Ceres, California.

Trinket's (as I call it) does great work. Randy Koga, who runs the rescue and cares for all the bunnies  is incredibly dedicated. He has bent over backwards to give the bunnies a great life. He cares for each bunny and gives them a great home, but also adopts them out.

The bunnies get free roam time, which not all rescues can do and receive all types of special care. There are special needs rabbits such as the bunny belle of the ball, Madison, who recently passed away, that are inspiring and receive the most wonderful care and love there.  Check out Madison's story here: Madison's Story Link

Many a Facebook fan/follower (including myself, I started bawling!) of Madison were devastated when she passed away from a kidney infection. She has been such an inspiring bunny and was becoming a sort of mischievous  "spokesbunny" for Trinket's.

Because of the special needs bunnies and other bunnies receiving needed and regular veterinary care (bunny checkups, neutering, etc.) at Trinket's Memorial Rabbit Sanctuary, Trinket's does pay a lot in vet bills.

To give you a little inspiration in making a purchase, Bunny Burrow Boutique is having a 20% off Holiday Sale starting today until November 30th, 2012 at 12am. The 20% off will not affect the one dollar donations Trinket's (TMRS) receives. Everything is automatically priced for 20% off. The sale price and the regular price both displayed!

Thanks for visiting Rabbit Slippers Blog today! Hoping you are having a Bunderful Day!

Please stop by the Bunny Burrow Boutique on Etsy. There are rabbit-themed jewelry items, but it's not limited to that! Remember to Vote for the Animals

While cruising Facebook one day, I came across an organization called Connecticut Votes for the Animals. They gave an endorsement for a Congressman running for one of our Senatorial seats because of his values and history which shows he is more likely to vote for legislation which supports the welfare of animals.  It did start me thinking.

An organization I found accidently through Facebook wasn't the first time I started to think about politics and animals shaping any upcoming votes.  The famous story of Mitt Romney's dog named Seamus got me thinking. Some links on Seamus: http://seamus2012.com/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitt_Romney_dog_incident.

If you follow my personal Twitter account you would know my personal political leanings, but I try to keep that out of my blog. I generally tried to keep politics out of my blog, period. I changed my mind on it for this piece though because I think it is another thing we really need to think about seriously.

If you are an animal lover and participate in social media such as Facebook, Twitter and so forth, you probably see requests from animal rescues, animal welfare organizations and the like to sign petitions, donate money, write letters to the editor or to our legislators.  Another way we can definitely reach out is with our vote.

Ask yourself the question, who will most likely support your beliefs in protecting animals and their welfare- be they pets, in a zoo, in the wild or on a farm?  I look at political parties or candidates and look at what they support. For example, question, "Do they support factory farms and the corporations that send out their products?" What candidates support good habitats for animals in the wild and the environment? What candidates create legislation or support companies that create GMO food and put it in food for our pets?  What legislators introduced, created or supported legislation to help deter or deal with animal cruelty? What issues out there directly or indirectly affect the welfare of animals?

Researching this stuff is a lot easier nowadays compared to years ago because you can directly "google" a topic. Many of these topics affect us as well, but viewing the candidates through the eyes of our animal friends can help you in your voting decision this year and every year. It is also another reason to get out there and vote.  Voting is a right that many generations have fought for to give us the power to start having a say. Each vote can make a big difference. Some elections have been won by fewer than 30 votes or even 1 or 2 votes!

So before going out to the voting booth. Take a look at their sweet little faces, whether they have fur, feathers, fins or scales, think about them and ask them who they would vote for.  Help give them a voice!

Bunnies Help With Depression

It's been a hard year, in some regards, dealing with the loss of my father.last year.  It's been difficult. In some some ways I wondered why I wasn't feeling the intensity of it like I did with the loss of my mother. There are a host of reasons of differences, but truly I felt a numbness. It wasn't acute.

The pain was a dull ache that was always there. I wondered why I didn't feel or enjoy things that I usually did. The depression from the loss was more of just a lack of feeling for many things. It was if there was and still is somewhat, a black hole that eats up the energy of those feelings. It's hard to explain.

My bunnies have brought distraction- sometimes it's just with their care, sometimes it's with their antics. Rabbits though, unlike TV or other forms of escape, interact with us. They kept me going. They provided love, friendship and gentle caring. Also, they nudge me to keep going, to remind me I still am needed and still have reasons to go on with my life.

Also, they have been non judgmental, and aren't telling me to "snap out of it" like some humans might. People do need to grieve on their own level at their own pace.  People do need those nudges but in ways that just remind us to connect with the physical world too. They don't tell us to "snap out of it", but to "stay connected" to those that are around us and with our world, but in a way that lets us do it at our own pace.

Do You Measure Time in Rabbits?

Silly as it seems, but I measure the passing of time in rabbits! Yes rabbits. It starts out in the Pre-Rabbit Era and the Rabbit Era.

The Pre-Rabbit Era had rabbits in it, but they weren't my own.  There were rabbits perhaps nudging me to start a rabbit era in my life, but that didn't happen right away.  Of course, as a little girl, I liked bunnies- stuffed ones, photos, etc. They were cute. I didn't like them in the way I do now. Rabbits lived in hutches and were outdoor animals. Never had them. I think I pested my parents for rabbits from time to time, but it never happened.

Then a roommate I had took over ownership of someone else's rabbit that had a cold. I didn't mind the rabbit. It hopped around and hid away most of the time. It did leave a trail of poops all over which I didn't care for, but they were dry.  I hated when she didn't clean the litter box, when we had to hide the bunny from the landlord and all her relatives kept calling it "the rodent". Still, it was Pre-Rabbit Era. I wasn't interested.

Then there was the Schwarz Krolick at the Eden Alternative nursing home I worked at.  I don't remember it's real name, but it was the Schwarz Krolick- an fellow employee (who was from Poland) and I (whose ancestry is part German) named the rabbit. It means black rabbit in part German and part Polish. We complained about the rabbit because we could never reach into the cage to give it care. It would bite and attack. I was pretty ignorant. Then one day we found it in it's cage with a fecal impaction. I brought it to the vet. I volunteered to do, but was terrified. I never actually had been to the vet before. The vet took the rabbit out and handled it with care and explained it needed exercise, lots of hay and water available all the time. I was terrified at having to remove that rabbit from the cage. It was my first insight though in to seeing rabbits as living, feeling creatures and the insight was helpful. I don't like admitting I was that ignorant, but I'm so glad I had that experience. Still Pre-Rabbit Era.

There were rabbits at other nursing homes that slowly brought me around to seeing what wonderful pets they were for nursing homes-with the right education about them. They still weren't my rabbits, but I found out they weren't like Schwarz Krolick, who really just needed to be neutered.

The Rabbit Era started with a super huge white bunny named Snowflake, who was donated to our nursing home as a pet. He immediately attracted the attention of the residents like at other places. I did his care in his cage, etc. I let him out for periods of time each day, then he started biting me and only me. Turned out, after much, much research, that he decided he liked me and chose me as his mate. He needed to go for the big snip. The other side of him was how he followed me all over the place in the huge nursing home. He would sit on my lap as I sent out fax after fax for public relations announcements, etc.  I fell in love with him also.  Sad thing was that my mother started dying of an aggressive cancer and I took a lot of time from working to spend with her.  There were people at the nursing home who thought all the rabbit did was stay in his cage all day. There was also the previous owner, an employee at the nursing home, who didn't like the fact that I brought him in from the outdoor hutch he came in (I immediately brought him in from there when I found cake with frosting, half loaves of Italian bread and the like thrown in his cage for him to eat) and thought I was was being cruel bringing him inside. No matter what I said or what book I showed them, they said I was cruel. The day I arrived to the nursing home when my mother came to spend her last days where I worked for hospice care, the rabbit was gone. Someone stole him overnight. It hit me, but I was also numb and helpless because of my mother's condition. I was so angry at everything.

The thing that brought the Rabbit Era to full essence, was Grumble Bunny. Someone brought in another rabbit, a baby, as a donation.  This was while we still had Snowflake. Grumble Bunny came home with me and continued the growth of the seed that Snowflake instilled in me. I think all the Pre-Rabbit bunnies slowly trained me. I have been hooked ever since. I have actually prayed for forgiveness from the bunnies I was ignorant to. They have totally changed my life and the way I looked at it.

I will break down the Eras more for you on another day.

Thanks for joining me here today. I do hope you will visit again soon.

Little White Bunny

Little White Bunny certainly didn't have a creative name, but it was different.  It was difficult to come up with a name for the little guy. We just couldn't think of one. Funny because there are so many good names out there, such as Caspar, Snowflake, and I'm sure many more. Little White Bunny just chose his own name because he got sick of us trying to pick one. He let us know he decided by responding to it every time we started talking about "the little white bunny".

Little White Bunny, affectionately known also as LWB (due to our embarrassment at such an uncreative sounding name) was a ruby-eyed white dwarf bunny with the softest prettiest coat, until the day he passed on at 11 years old.  He had a sweetness about him that was very special, but also was very mischievous. He loved to chew on things and dig at towels, sheets and rugs like crazy. He charmed everyone he met.

A rabbit rescue tried to get me to trade LWB for a big white rabbit they named Chucky, because of his behavior. They didn't consider him adoptable.  At the time, I had a full house in the bunny department and couldn't take Chucky in. I also wasn't going to give away a member of my family. I am so glad that I didn't because of all the bunderful things in my life I shared and the bunderful things in his life I got to witness. I wouldn't have traded him for the world!

He did bunny visits at nursing homes I worked at & volunteered at also through the years.  On different occasions at different places, employees and co-workers would try to get me to give him to them or sell him to them because of his antics, lovableness, cuteness and sweetness.  Some people actually hounded me! I decided to not bring him in anymore to one place I worked because I was nervous someone would take him from me they were so interested. It was like he had a stalker!

LWB, survived several wives (some tried to dominate him and he outlived others).  He was with Lorelei (a big white Angora),   Zakarina, Bun Bun, Trixie and Dust Bunny.  He was picked on and bullied to a point of losing weight by two and Zakarina was the love of his life.

One time he was attacked by two bunnies (before being partnered with wives) he got a long with before and had big gouges taken out of his rear end. I was terrified he would die. It was early on and I didn't know that much about bunnies then. He did wonderfully though with help of a vet. There were some things the books didn't prepare me for.

Little White Bunny lived through most of my marriage and was there in the early days. He was the last bunny I had that moved over to our house from the apartment my husband and I had in the early days of our life together.  Little White Bunny responded to each of us differently and seemed to choose one of us to be his favorite for a while then would switch.  Sometimes my husband seemed to compete for his love and attention, but LWB didn't pay attention to things we would do for his attention. He wouldn't fall for the influence of extra treats, attention, privileges, etc. given to him. He decided that he liked who he liked best at any given moment.

Little White Bunny was affectionate til the end. He passed away a couple of weeks ago. He lost the use of his rear legs suddenly and didn't last long after that. He was 11 and a half years old. He never made it to a trip to the vet for his last few hours.  It was and is so hard to let him go. I miss him and look at the empty cage he slept in. It seems to represent the empty place in my heart he so lovingly filled.
