The Christmas season can be stressful if we feel that we have to spend lots of money on gifts for friends and relatives. My family has decided to eliminate some of that stress by including hand made gifts this year. I will show you how to use the items below to make a gift that any grandparent, parent, aunt or uncle will cherish more than all the electronics that money can buy.

Christmas Shop and Help Bunnies! Binky Bunny store

As a service to Rabbit Slippers Readers and to organizations that help bunnies, Rabbit Slippers is sharing this place to help bunnies, those that Binky Bunny helps and of course shoppers to get great gifts!
Name of Business:   BinkyBunny (BinkyBunny.com)

Links for Business: www.BinkyBunny.com

Contact info: e-mail and whatever else you wish to include: Info@binkybunny.com

What do you sell?  Hay, Pellets, Treats, Toys, Books, Playhouses, "Surrogate" Bunnies (which is basically a real looking toy bunny to help keep single real bunnies company if need be).

Do you have any holiday specials, gifts, cards or other items available? We have a Seasonal Section that includes Holiday Binky Bag, along with some other seasonal themed items like a willow candy cane, soft tree and star chews, Vine Star, etc.

Describe your business:  And educational and community based site that offer tips and tricks for living with house rabbits. It's supported by a great store that offers products that cater to rabbit health and behavior.  (Though other animals like guinea pigs, chins and even cats have enjoyed some of our products!)   We love rabbits and all of their goofy and yet challenging behaviors that make them wonderfully rabbity!   If a rabbit is happy, healthy and distracted from chewing on "people" stuff, then humans are happy too. So it's a win win.

We didn't start out as a store - we created a site to make it fun and easy to learn about what goes into having a house rabbit as an animal companion. However, as the site grew very fast and forum membership rose, maintaining a site became more expensive and so we opened a store to help support the site. Soon we discovered other vendors who loved bunnies as much as we did and so not only did we create products of our own, we seek out businesses that truly care about the well-being of the animals they sell for.   From Oxbow Hay company to other smaller companies that also take pride and care in their work ethic, customer service and product quality.  With these wonderful partnerships, we have created a line of favorites and unique products that bunnies love.

When should people order by for Xmas delivery?   This depends on which shipping method they choose and where they live:
                                                               Fedex Ground & Fedex Home
:                                                            East Coast - Thursday the 16th
                                                                  MidWest - Friday, 17th
West Coast Sunday the 18th
FedEx Smartpost - (passed --Tuesday the 14th)
Hawaii, Canada, Alaska
USPS Parcel Post - (passed) Tuesday the 14th
USPS Priority International - Thursday the 16th
USPS Priority - Monday the 20th

Tell us a little about your own bunny/bunnies:  Currently, I have one bunny, Vivian, who I adopted from SaveABunny.org.  We lost our beautiful bunny Jack in May due to cancer and we miss him terribly. He was sort of our BinkyBunny mascot, but more importantly he was just a wonderful bunny who represented the "second chance" that rescue bunnies need.  I also adopted him from SaveABunny.org and he would lunge and bite, but I knew that big lug of a bunny had a soft spot and it was all fear based, and that a little extra love and attention would soften him up.  And it did.  : )    He became a fun loving goofy character that found a special place in my heart.    Vivian is a character as well and has a bit of a Vivatude.  Her huffs and lunges may have played a part as to why she was in shelters and then at the rescue for two years, but like Jack, she is a big huffin' bluffer, and will just melt at being pet.  She helped comfort Jack when he was sick by allowing him to lean on her, and she would stay by his side during his the harder times.  I love rescue bunnies because you can see how resilient they are and how much they can come out of their shell with patience and love.

Are you an organization that helps rabbits such as a rescue? Feel free to elaborate how this organization helps bunnies.  I volunteered for many years for SaveABunny.org and I really miss doing more hands on volunteer work, but we moved further away from SaveABunny, and then as our business grew, my time became extremely restricted.  So we try and help out in other ways.
We help via our affiliate program.  A rescue can sign up to be an affiliate and link to our site and receive a percentage of profits from those that were referenced from their site to ours.

We also get many requests for product donations and financial donations from rescues throughout the U.S.   We can't help out everyone as we are small business ourselves, but we help out about 10 rescues a year that way. We don't choose one over the other, just happens to be the timing of the request and where we are financially at the moment.   We wish we could help out more, but we are not capable of doing more than we already do.  As we grow though, our ability to help even further will also grow.

Do you help out rabbit rescues  through donations, volunteer time or anything like that?.  I think I incorporated this in the above answer. :)

If you do help out organizations, feel free to describe it more and to give them a plug also.
I can add that most of the time organizations ask for funds or product donations -- normally for an auction that will raise money to help support their rescue efforts.
I hate to plug one organization over another because I know how hard people in rescue work. It's never ending, can be overwhelming, and it's a constant balancing act to make sure there are enough funds, enough people and enough space to make it all work.  To mention one feels unfair in some ways, but I can at least tell you that my first rescue bunny, Rucy, came from the House Rabbit Society in Richmond. I have attended many of their seminars, classes, clicker training etc -- as they have wonderful educational activities. And their site is an incredible source of information that I am always referring people to.  My next two bunnies came from SaveABunny.org.   I volunteered there for several years.  It was a wonderful learning experience as I was able to see in action the dedication and passion that it takes for someone to manage and run a rescue. Super human powers are needed and Marcy, the owner of SaveABunny.org, seems to have plenty.  If it weren't for her, bunnies like my, Jack and Vivian, may have otherwise been at risk for euthanasia, but she has a heart that looks beyond first impressions.   Because of that insight, Jack and Vivian were given a second chance and were able to blossom into amazing and loving bunnies, who enjoyed a fun and joyful life. (Vivian still enjoying!)

Attached are some photos of Jack (white bunny who passed away in May 2011)
I didn't attach them in any particular order:

Both of these photos show Vivian caring for Jack when he was sick
When Jack got cancer, Vivian would give him extra attention and make sure she kept him warm and cleaned his face and ears.  Not that I want to display depressing photos but what is special about it is that it shows how nurturing Vivian really is -- it says alot about her.
Vivian Snoozing

Vivian snoozing -- she loves to snuggle up and she feels so safe that she will close her eyes when she sleeps (many bunnies sleep with their eyes open).     You have to remember, Vivian used to be considered an "attack bunny" and many were scared of her as she has a serious bluff.  But she is one of the sweetest bunnies I have had -- even though she's got spunk!
Playful Jack

Jack playing in a box!

Jack, who used to be a big scaredy cat type of bunny and also would lash out and scare people came out of his shell when given love and attention.  He loved to run and binky and explore boxes.

Just goes to show how much power that love and patience have on other living beings -- amazing and beautiful things can happen within the well-being of animals that were once were given away and almost given up on.

The 14th Day of Christmas: The Bunnies of Christmas

It's a pleasure to be sharing in this special blog share, The 25 Days of Christmas,  started by the Parga's Junkyard Blog. I hope you check out the other blog posts sharing the holiday season with 24 bloggers who have joined forces to make this season a bit more magical..

25 Days of Christmas

 The Bunnies of Christmas...

Often the Holidays can be a difficult or lonely time for those who have no family or friends nearby, or are left behind because it is difficult to manage having one come to visit for a holiday visit-perhaps due to constraints of illness.  Or sadder still, whether through ill family relations or neglectful family, the elderly or disabled family member is left behind.
It is usually difficult for an elderly or sick person in a nursing home, hospital, or assisted living facility, who receives few or no visits, to watch others receive visits or go out during the holiday season.  I have seen this first hand, having worked in nursing homes, a rehab hospital and mental health facility for about 18 years. Even the smallest gesture is appreciated by these people and can mean a lot.

On the other hand, the warmth of a hug, for example, is nice when given by perhaps a staff person or visitor from a church, it is not always the same as when these people participate in interactions with animals.  There is something about animals, that for most people will let them feel even more relaxed and free to enjoy the interaction than with people they aren't as familiar with. Often times the results are amazing!

For years, I have participated in pet therapy programs with various animals owned by facilities or more often with bringing in my own houserabbits (litterbox trained and all!).  Come share this recent holiday season visit at an assisted living facility and feel the holiday magic yourself with the bunnies of Christmas!

A group was already assembled when we arrived.  Two bunnies, Grumbellina, a diva, a six year old not-so-mini Mini Lop breed and a male Angora (trimmed down) named Goldilocks (we thought he was a girl at first! And he was so pretty!) went with me to participate in the visit to my mother-in-law's assisted living facility.
We let Goldilocks have the run of the room for he is quite social and good at making the rounds! One lady was quite taken with Goldilocks and at one point, with my help, scooped him up to hold him, which is something he loves! I gave raisins to a few ladies who were interested in giving one to Goldilocks as he made his rounds about the room.  A couple of ladies felt frustrated that he wouldn't take raisins right away, but he eventually did and he pleased his public!

Grumbellina, the black and white diva made the rounds with me visiting with people who held her or wanted to pet or touch her, depending on their comfort level.

During the holiday season, these visits can make an extra special difference because of the instant unconditional love and rapport most people seem to have with the rabbits.  It is special because it is a two way interaction that brings about the the touch, the socialization among the human peers and with the rabbits.  Bunny visits are also special during great one on one.

It is often done in a resident's or patient's room for loners or perhaps bed-ridden people.  It also makes a setting less clinical or institutional. It makes it feel more like home.

During this visit, we also answered questions about rabbits, which brought about much laughter. The visiting continued while the facility person passed out some "Eggnog bars" they made earlier in the day.
Still, like with people, we can all feel a little tired and welcome a little private space with a bit of quiet time to ourselves.  This is one reason, it is a good idea to bring more than one rabbit during visits with more than a few people. The rabbits can take breaks and also share the "workload". Grumbellina didn't want to visit as much on her own, making as many rounds as Goldilocks did, after being held. She visited a bit then ran away for some privacy under a chair.

The bunnies and the people seemed to truly enjoy their visit.  The bunnies enjoyed some extra special treats as reward for their work and a bit of quiet time if they wanted it when they went home.

This special time makes the people the bunnies visited feel more like the special people they really are.

Thank you for sharing this visit with us!

Mary Ellen

Bunnies In Baskets Interview

Hi there,
Thanks for stopping by! I am very happy to be sharing this wonderful interview with Sarah Baran of the organization Bunnies in Baskets.  Sarah is Executive Director of Bunnies in Baskets and here to share all about Bunnies in Baskets with us.

RS:  Hi, Welcome to Rabbit Slippers...I am  happy to have you with us to share about Bunnie-in-Baskets. Could you tell us a bit about Bunnies-in-Baskets?
BIB: We are a 501(c)3 that trains Visiting Rabbit Teams (human and rabbit OR bonded pair) and provides community humane education.
RS:    How and when did Bunnies-in-Baskets start?
BIB: I wanted to take my bunnies on visits and didn't want the "rules" of the dog-oriented organizations.  I started BIB because bunnies are NOT dogs----and we can structure ourselves accordingly.  (Bunnies don't get vaccines, etc.....don't need collars.....)

RS: Was there a certain inspiration for Bunnies-in-Baskets?
BIB: I was in a national organization with my dog and loved every minute. However when I wanted to visit with my rabbits, it was all rules, rules, rules and nobody seemed clear about them or had experience with a rabbit.  I wanted to create the organization and program I needed.

RS: You like to bring Adopted Rabbits in your program, correct? Do you adopt based on certain criteria for your program?
BIB: Many BIB rabbits have been adopted or are currently in foster care. Spaying/neutering is recommended, but not required.  What we do need are certain personality traits----rabbits that are "human curious" and enjoy petting are great candidates.

RS:  Do you train the bunnies and/or your volunteers?
BIB: Yes.  We have a comprehensive online training class of readings, evaluation and practicum activities.  The vet certifies the health and temperment of each rabbit and BIB registers each team.

RS:     Can you tell us a bit about that?
BIB: What is most important is learning to read your rabbit's language.  We must always put the animal's needs first---we are asking a lot of them.  The practicum activities offer great operational insight in measured doses.  We offer feedback, support and lots of resources!

RS:    Do you have volunteers that  bring in their own bunnies also?
BIB: Yes---mostly it is a person with their own bunnies.  We do have an affiliate membership available for organizations.  We are an international organization---USA and Canada.
RS:   Who takes care of the bunnies?
BIB: The person who owns them.

RS: What types of places do you visit with bunnies? Do they have any restrictions?
BIB: No---hospitals, schools, nursing homes,etc.....  We offer excellent insurance to our Visiting Rabbit Teams.

RS: What guidelines do you follow?
BIB: http://www.avma.org/issues/policy/animal_assisted_guidelines.asp

RS: Do you support other organizations or recommend any for any purposes?
BIB: We informally support the House Rabbit Society and their state affiliates.
RS: Can we meet some of your bunnies?

BIB:We have too many to count!  However, please visit our website and thereare tons of pictures!

RS: You have a store that helps support your program-please tell us more info how we can support your program?
BIB: Please come and visit at http://www.bunniesinbaskets.org/store.html ----have some fun, and buy something useful and good for people, bunnies and the world!

I would really like to thank Sarah Baran for taking the time to share with us about Bunnies in Baskets!  You have me thinking of even starting an affiliate chapter here! Having done bunny visits, I know how special it is to the recipients and the volunteers! There is something magic that takes place.

Meet Boris the Bunny of Critterqueen's Rabbit Rescue

 Hello,
Welcome to Rabbit Slippers Blog! I would like to introduce Boris the Bunny, a sweet guy from a small Rabbit Rescue in Washington State.  Please get to know a bit about him and the Rescue he is at!

Rabbit Name:Boris

Rabbit Rescue Name:Critterqueen's Rabbit Rescue

Boris is a Pure Black Satin Breed Bunny Rabbit that was just Neutered, a Medium Size Bunny ready to Hug.

Age: About 1 year old.

History: Borris was turned in by his family, as they had to move and were not being able to take with them. This family really wants  Boris to get a really good home.  He used to be a very nervous bunny, but has  settled down quite nicely and loves to be held and snuggled

About Us: Our name is Critterqueen's Rabbit Rescue and we are in Maple Valley, WA----We are a privately run Rescue.  We are small and rely on donations and volunteers to keep it going.  We will take just about any bunny in for any reason.  Foster homes are helpful when we have babies that need loving or just have too many bunnies.  Our needs mainly consist of enough people to be sure the bunnies have clean cages and plenty of food and water.

Links: Facebook, Petco in Covington, WA, Reber Ranch in Kent, WA,   word of mouth

Events:   We are at Petco a few times a month and Reber Ranch several times a year.  We also participate in any adoptions or pet paloozas that we are invited to.  I will try and keep you up to date on those.  They will definitely get posted on our FB page.

Contact: jannjaa@yahoo.com or critterqueen22@aol.com  (Martha Blake who runs the Rescue)
Adoptable Rabbits Links/List: We will be posting them on FB.
Let me know if you wish to take them off there or I should email them to you.

An Additional Thought from Critterqueen's Rabbit Rescue:  "Bunnies are very special and misunderstood little creatures.  They truly do make wonderful pets."

Thank You to Critterqueen for providing this information. Please go check them out on Facebook for lots more information!
