Rabbit Name: DeNiro

Rabbit Rescue Name: New Moon Rabbit Rescue

What type of bunny/description: Flemish Giant, Sandy colour, Neutered Male

Age: 3 years

History: DeNiro was one of nine baby rabbits who arrived at the rescue,
orphaned by their mother and unwanted by their owners. They were estimated to
be 4 days old.

Story: DeNiro and his siblings were bottle fed and lovingly cared for by rescue
volunteers for months. Unfortunately, because of complications involved in handrearing
baby rabbits and rare genetic disorder (osteogenesis imperfecta), all but
two of his siblings passed away before they were 3 months old. Fortunately, little
DeNiro made it through with flying colours.
He was adopted by one of his caregivers early in 2009 and has been a free
roaming bunny with cat and dog friends ever since. Today, he is the happiest
rabbit you will ever meet, constantly flopping and showing off with spectacular binkies!

Once he was adopted, DeNiro was introduced to his new girlfriend – a then 2-
year-old Mini Rex/Dwarf named Gypsy. She is blind and was still grieving the
loss of her bonded friend who passed away in July 2008. She quickly took to the
young, handsome DeNiro and they have been a beautiful couple ever since!
They love to play and cuddle together and Gypsy adores grooming him for long
periods.

DeNiro is a spoiled bunny and wouldnʼt have it any other way!
Other details: DeNiro loves when his humans sing his name to him, answering
with some binkies or even just a few head shakes. He is a toy connoisseur and
likes to cause trouble in the kitchen at night when his humans have gone to bed
and canʼt call him a naughty bunny! Because he was adopted by his former
caregiver and VP of New Moon, he has the privilege of having the occasional
houseguest in the form of other bunnies just like him, who he never misses the
opportunity to show off to.

New Moon Rabbit Rescue was formed in September 2006 with one main goal: to
provide unwanted, abandoned, neglected, or abused domestic rabbits with a
second chance at human love and appropriate care.
We are a "no-kill" organization dedicated to providing care for rescued domestic
rabbits. All rabbits remain in foster homes until such time as they are adopted to
loving, caring homes. As such, we are ALWAYS seeking new foster homes.
We work with high-volume shelters in order to give these rabbits a second
chance at adoption, as well as accepting stray rabbits and VERY
OCCASIONALLY, rabbits from owners surrendering their pet.

Duchess's Story

Dear Rabbit Slippers,

       My name is Duchess, AKA Chocolate Bunny, AKA DuchessBunny. I was adopted from Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue in Baton Rouge, Louisiana....But I was actually rescued from another state!

   It all started in Florida when a breeder had more rabbits than she could afford, 77 to be exact. Because she couldn't pay to feed us anymore, she was going to put us all to sleep with a homemade gas chamber. The story then hit the local news where a zoo heard about it, and offered to pay $8 a rabbit and take us all and feed us to snakes!! Well she didn't want to do that either, so she was going to go ahead with her plan, until Gainesville Rabbit Rescue stepped in and offered to take in ALL of us, (with the help of other rescues) but this breeder lady wanted some $$, thankfully rabbit fans helped out and they were able to pay for all of us to get out of there! Since Gainesville couldn't house all 77 for us, let alone pay for all our spays and neuters, we were transported to various rescues, and I was fortunate enough to head over to Magic Happens Rescue! Although I was only supposed to stay there till I was spayed, and then head over to a different rescue.

   As soon as Magic Happens Rescue fans heard that there were going to be mini-rexes heading that way, a lot of foster-to-adopt homes opened up, and lucky for me, there were more "requests" for mini-rexes than there were mini-rexes that were going to be staying at MHRR, so I got to stay!!

     My Slave had been one of those foster to adopt homes; you see, one of her first bunnies, Daisy had had a buddy, Maisy, but she had passed away earlier that year. Daisy didn't really need a buddy, and the Slave had tried to get her a buddy about a month after Maisy had passed, but that bunny was NOT very nice to Daisy!! So the Slave told herself that she wasn't going to try to bond her again....Until she saw the pictures of the mini-rexes coming in!! So the Slave ended up sending in an email, and was then asked which bunnies she was interested in. Her first choice had actually been a tri-colored mini rex, and I was her second choice!! (I still can't believe that!!) Lucky for me, the other bunny already had a home lined up for them, so after I was spayed, the Slave took me home. Sadly, Daisy became sick less than a month after I had been there, so we didn't really get to try to bond (Didn't want to stress Daisy anymore than she had too.), and about 3 months later Daisy passed away, they still don't know why. The Slave was heartbroken after losing her two bunny girls only 7 months apart, she still misses them a lot. She had them both for around 5 years, she was very used to their habits, likes, and dislikes, so having a "new" bunny was very hard for her. It was a struggle that first month, but pretty soon I started growing on her. You see, I looooove head rubs, I close my eyes, put my head down, and sometimes even flop, which just melts any Slave heart, as I just enjoy them so much! I also love to show off by doing binkies, and, of course, my diggy dance, which I do on the bed. (I kick my back feet twice making this funny sound.) I also get into silly moods where if a Slave tickles me, I'll binky. From what we can figure, I"m between 2-3 years old, but we can't exactly go on behavior since while I was with the breeder I lived in an all wire cage and only had pellets. No toys, no hay, and only the bunny next door for company. (Have I mentioned how much fun toys are? And how delicious hay is? And I can't forget the greens!!)

   I've taught the Slave a lot over these past 8 months...Like how you need to hide wires, make sure anything plastic is put up, books are out of reach, and, most importantly chairs aren't out to where a certain bunny can jump on the table and get into chocolate. I've gotten the Slave to create my own blog (theworldofduchess.blogspot.com) and also my fun blog, bunnyfunnies,blogspot.com. I've been quite the ray of sunshine in the Slave's life, I am always finding some way to make her smile, no matter what's going on in her life. The Slave is so thankful to Gainesville for rescuing all of us, but she is VERY thankful to Magic Happens for taking me and 8 other bunnies in.  She doesn't quite know what she would do with herself without her little Chocolate Bunny around to put a smile on her face.

Edison's Story

Rabbit Name: Edison

Rabbit Rescue Name: New Moon Rabbit Rescue

What type of bunny/description: Holland Lop, White, Neutered Male

Age: About 1 year

History: Edison is one of ten rabbits who came to New Moon from a massive
seizure in Northern Ontario.

Story: Edison, along with the other arrivals from the seizure, was immediately
treated for many issues relating to the horrible conditions he came from, including
an upper respiratory infection and rabbit syphilis. He luckily recovered very
quickly.
While still in treatment, his gorgeous blue eyes and cute as a button face caught
the attention of a potential adopter on New Moonʼs Facebook page. It was love
at first sight when they met and he was adopted as soon as he completed his
treatment and was given a clean bill of health.
He lives in a wonderful home with a Lionhead brother named Simba, a puppy
and pet rats too! He loves to eat all the time and especially loves strawberries
and bananas.
Edison has brought nothing but happiness into the lives of his family members
and has even helped bring Simba out of his shell and make his life more
meaningful.
 
Other details: Edison loves to watch TV with Simba and his human mom! His
favourites include Toy Story, Ratatouille and Princess Mononoke. He is a mother
hen to the other animals in his family and loves them all. The rats love to sit
under his ears and bum and Edison never minds!

Mick's Story

The Legend of The Mick

Had to take Mickey to the vet's today for his quarterly tooth-grinding. Because his molars grow in at a slight angle, they don't wear as they should and begin developing points and irritating his mouth, which causes all kinds of problems for him. His vet and I had hoped that he wouldn't need to have them ground down too often, and at one point, it was looking like it would only need to get done maybe twice a year, but because he starts showing signs of irritation when the points are barely forming, we decided that it was best to be proactive and get them before he's too bothered.

Oddly enough, it was because of his teeth that I nearly passed him by when I was looking for a new rabbit. When my rabbit, Karnage, passed away in April of 2008, I was devastated, but at the same time, I knew I needed another rabbit. There are two shelters in my area; the first one I called didn't take in rabbits, but the second, Berkshire Humane Society , did. I made an appointment to check out the rabbits they had, then went to their webpage to see if they had any pictures of the rabbits they had. On their front page was a picture of the sweetest-looking little orange lop. I was immediately interested, since I hadn't owned a lop since my first rabbit. I went to their "small animals" section; the little orange lop was named Lolo and he had been brought to the shelter the month before. One thing I noticed on his description, though; he had some "tooth issues". "Tooth issues" can mean anything from slightly overgrown teeth that need maybe a trim and a better diet to "expect to spend a fortune at the vet for the next 10 years". I made a note to ask about the "tooth issues", but in my mind, I had already crossed him off the list. There were a bunch of sweet-looking bunnies available, even a bonded pair, and I was trying very hard to keep my mind open when I made the trip to the shelter.

When I got there, there were five rabbits available: a female with some major "bunnitude", mainly territory issues; a male mini-Rex who spooked easily and needed a quiet home, a bonded pair who I fell in love with but didn't have the room for, and Lolo. I asked about the "tooth issues"; they said that his back teeth were overgrown because of a poor diet and neglect and needed to be ground down, which they would do before he went to a new home. As far as their vet could tell, a proper diet would improve his teeth. I decided to see how he would respond to me, so we went into one of their introduction rooms.

My son wanted me to send him any pics of the rabbits I looked at, so I took pictures with my cell phone.

Lolo was very shy at first; as soon as he was put on the floor, he scooted under the bench in the corner.

I sat down on the floor and waited, talking to him very softly. He didn't budge for a few minutes, but finally, he started moving around.

He hopped over to the door, then back under the bench, then back to the door again. I took a few pictures while he was at the door, then he started hopping around the room.

He began exploring the room, back and forth. Eventually, he started coming over to where I sat, letting me pet him a little before he'd toss his ears and dance away for a bit, then return for more. He made his way around the small room, then went back under the bench.

A minute or so later, he hopped over to where I was sitting on the floor. It was an unseasonably warm April day, so I was wearing shorts and sandals and had my legs stretched out in front of me. To my surprise and delight, he started licking my ankle. I'd known that some rabbits do lick, but had never had one lick me before, so I was thrilled. "Well, aren't you the little charmer?" I said to him.

He hopped further up alongside my leg, and started licking my calf. I said, "You are just the sweetest thing."

Then he tried to hump my knee.

Oh yeah, this one was coming home with me. :)

Surprisingly, he let me scoop him up so I could open the door and bring him back to the small animals area. The girl in charge was very impressed. She said he wasn't usually that cooperative. She gave me the rundown on his history. One of the staff, coming in to work for that day, saw a woman leaving a small box by the shelter door. He checked the box, saw the rabbit inside, and ran to catch the woman, who was about to get in her car and leave. He persuaded her to come in and formally surrender the rabbit, which she claimed to have found in her basement. They had him listed as a Holland Lop, which is the smallest of the lop breeds, and said he was about ten months old. I filled out the paperwork and made an appointment to pick him up after he'd had his tooth work done.

On May 1, 2008, I went to the shelter and picked up my new rabbit. Along with a new home, he got a new name: Mickey, so named because his orange fur reminded me of the hair color of Mickey Mantle, the legendary baseball player for the New York Yankees (my favorite team). Since then, we have determined that he is definitely a Mini Lop and not a Holland, his tooth issues are manageable but still require many vet visits, and he is the loviest, snuggliest bunny on earth.

Helena and Hemingway's Story

In August of 2010, I read an article on 51 rabbits being surrendered from a hording situation to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm in Methuen, Massachusetts.  My wife's family had a rabbit while she was growing up and she always spoke of the fond memories of that rabbit.  We had discussed getting a rabbit but had never progressed the conversation further.  I forwarded her the article and without hesitation, she wanted to go adopt one.

From what we were told, she was "saving" the animals from breeders who were planning on either releasing them into the wild or killing them.  Also, she found some on craigslist that were listed as being "free" - she didn't want them to end up as snake food.  Her heart was in the right place but over crowding in cages - some had 5 or 6 buns in small cages - as well as lack of proper care was a major issue.  When they were surrendered, all the rabbits had pasturella - they think one rabbit came in with it and it spread to the rest of them.  The amazing part of the surrender is that even though some of the buns were quite sick, only 1 had to be put down.  They were able to save the rest.

My wife and I made the trip up to Nevins Farm to check out the rabbits and see if any of them would be good for us to bring home.  We walked in the rabbit room and saw so many cages...so many rabbits.  The first to catch our eye was Hemingway.  A white dwarf rabbit with very blue eyes, and a small patch of fur on top of his head that was about a year old - we think he was less than that.  When we picked him up, and held him, we could hear his wheezing, he would sneeze from time to time, and it melted our hearts.  We fell in love with him instantly.  My wife stood by his cage, holding him, and stroking his soft white fur.  We new regardless of how sick he was, we wanted to bring him home.

We walked around the room and my wife saw another bun that caught her eye - Helena.  A 1 1/2 - 2 year old shy bun that looked like your typical light brown rabbit.  But she had such big brown eyes and long eye lashes.  My wife wanted to hold her but Helena wanted nothing to do with that.  Helena was in a pen and this little rabbit was smart and quick.  "Just scoop her up" my wife suggested to me.  If Helena would let me, I would have.  A volunteer helped and she did hold her.  Helena was nervous and not too crazy about being held.  We put her back in the cage and the volunteer asked if we wanted to adopt any of the rabbits.  I told her we'd like to adopt Hemingway and my wife added, "and Helena too!".  I looked at my wife and she said, "we can't bring just one home...they'll be lonely when we're at work."  We filed the paper work and were told that we had to wait for the all clear from the vets but we would be able to bring them home soon.  (I should add that I had never had a pet before and was going by her past knowledge of taking care of a rabbit.  I had no idea what I was getting myself into but knew my wife did and from what she had described to me, I felt I could handle it.)

On the way home, we talked about why we picked the two we did...Hemingway grabbed us from the start...sweet...calm...and seemed so loveable.  Helena was a tough one.  That little rabbit wouldn't let me hold her and was completely shy, but my wife simply said, "Helena needs love, that's all."

A few days later, we were told we could bring Helena home but Hemingway was still too sick.  We traveled up, newly purchased carrier in hand, and brought Helena home.  We visited with Hemingway while there and we were told it would likely be at least a week or two before he could come home.  We were like goofy kids...took a bunch of pictures and acted like kids.  We found out that Helena LOVES to be petted - but on her terms.  She loves to have someone rub her ears and her head.  And she also is not a fan of hard wood floors, but that's ok as we had an area rug that she hops on when we would take her out of her cage.

Two weeks went by...and two weeks more....Hemingway still was too sick to bring home.  We'd call and talk to the staff at Nevins Farm and apologized for constantly bugging them, we just wanted to bring him home.  The day came and we were able to bring him home but because he was still sick, he was not neutered.  We'd have to wait for him to be better for that to happen so no bonding attempts until that was taken care of.  We brought Hemingway home with pretty much the same attitude as Helena.  He was still sneezing but not as much as before.  We had to give him Baytril twice a day, but that didn't matter to us.  He was "home" and it didn't take long for Hemingway to make our home his.  The first time we took him out of the cage, he hopped...EVERYWHERE!.  No fear of the hardwood in him, he jumped up on the couch and all over the apartment.  If we lost track of him, all we had to do was listen for a sneeze.

Then we had a scare...a few weeks later, I came home, took Hemingway out of his cage and something wasn't right.  He wasn't eating much and his head was drooping forward a bit.  My wife had worked form home that day and said he was active and didn't take his usual nap so we thought he was just tired.  But he wasn't hoping around the house and he didn't seem to have balance.  We had a vet appointment the next day and thought, we would wait until then to have him looked at.  The next morning, he was completely lethargic and his head droop was worse.  But what scared us was he was not eating and his typical healthy bunny poop looked no where near what it should.  We decided to bring him to the MSPCA for his vet appointment early.  We loaded him into his carrier and drove up to Methuen.  We noticed that his head was no longer drooping but was flat on the floor of the carrier.  That scared us a bit.

When we got up there and showed one of the vet techs the issue, her face said it all.  "I've never seen a rabbit do this" and she rushed him back to the vets.  The small animal specialist - Sheri - came out to talk to us.  (I had exchanged regular emails with her to let her know the status of our buns so we had talked before.)  We went into a room and she shut the door.  She was visibly shaken up.  Hemingway was in rough shape.  The vets weren't sure if he was suffering and that was the last thing anyone wanted.  They told us that it was doubtful he was going to make it.  Sheri asked us what we wanted to do and we quickly replied that we didn't want him to suffer but wanted to give him a chance.  They were going to give him some meds, some critical care, and hope for the best.  She actually started to cry a little while telling us this.  Sheri told us that Hem was one of her favorites of the group of 51 rabbits that came in.  She loved him and her actions proved that.  The next day, she went in - on her day off - to check on him.  When the phone rang, I jumped...the news we had hoped for we received.  Hem was doing much, much better.  The meds were working.  He still wasn't eating but was doing better.  Needless to say, we were so relieved.

I want to add in that Sheri was and is fantastic!  She always answered any questions I had and really took  the time to go above and beyond with Hemingway as you'll see.

The next day we went up to visit him and we saw his personality was back.  As he hopped around the office we were in, he jumped on my wife's lap and nose bumped her nose like he did when we had him out at home.  It was like he knew who she was and missed her.  He sat in her lap for a few minutes and then went off exploring in true Hemingway fashion.  That drive home, we were so happy.   We emailed Sheri to see how he was doing and went up to visit him.  Sheri put a sign on Hem's cage that read, "Sheri Only!  Special Care Required".  Sheri went in on her days off to check on Hem.  She was shocked by how much a 3lb dwarf rabbit could eat!

About 3 weeks later, Hemingway came home for the 2nd time.  He was now on Zythromax rather than Baytril and was responding and doing so much better.  Over the next few weeks we noticed that even though Hemingway and Helena were not bonded yet - Hem still hadn't been neutered - they were very curious about each other.  When Hemingway was out, he'd get up on his hind legs to look in her cage and Helena would do the same.  We decided that rather than keep them in the cages when we were at work, we would put them in rabbit proof areas of the house where they could see each other and we'd know they were safe.  Helena in one room and Hemingway in the hallway next to it.  We bought baby gates to block the doors.and enjoyed watching them "flirt" with each other.  On more than a few times, we'd see Helena on one side of the gate and Hemingway on the other side, sitting next to each other.

A few months later, we were given the green light to take him off the meds and see how it went.  After about 2 weeks, we scheduled the neuter.  We were thrilled! 

About a month later, we started the bonding process.  The first few "dates", Hemingway chased Helena endlessly, it wasn't going well.  We gave them a break and tried again.  Helena calmed down a bit but was still hopping away.  My wife decided to try and put Hemingway in Helena's cage while Helena was in it and see what would happen.  They looked at each other and very cautiously watched each other.  After about 10 minutes, she moved Hemingway back to his cage.  The next day, we did it again except this time for about 20 minutes..no issues and she gave them some green pepper to eat together.  It was going well.  Then we took them out of their cages together and put them on the area rug.  They were fine...some grooming...eating...no issues.  After a few play dates like that as well as some time in each others cages together, we put them in the cage together for a day.  They got along completely.  The bond was a good one.

There isn't a day we aren't entertained by them.  Helena is a thumper who likes to let us know when she doesn't like something.  Who knew a little rabbit could thump so loudly.  Hemingway doesn't thump much, but he does look at you with very inquisitive expressions.  They're completely spoiled rabbits with plenty of toys and they receive lots of love.  My wife was right about Helena...she needed love.  She also likes to play catch.  She'll pick up a little ball and throw it and enjoys when you give it back to her to throw again.  Hemingway doesn't play much.  His play is exploring around the house.  If he's gone too long, Helena will hop to the edge of the area rug and look for him. 

The one surprise we had from Hemingway is that we found out he is a mix of dwarf and lionhead or wooley.  That cute little piece of fur on top of his head, developed into s full face of fur.

Etsy Shop Will Donate to Baskets for Bunnies until Easter Day

Hi there,

Just wanted to announce that as of this posting, my new Etsy shop is beginning to list items for sale. It only has a few, but slowly I am posting them. The shop is going by CuddleLop (my account name I use for purchases on Etsy) until an official name comes from the naming contest (Click here for details) soon. The shop is listing items for sale and needs to have a more unique "store front", but you can make purchases if you like at this link http://www.etsy.com/shop/CuddleLop. There will be a big grand opening when it is officially opened under it's new name.

To top it off, for every purchase made at this shop, a donation of one dollar ($1.00) will be made to Baskets for Bunnies, until Easter Day of this year, Sunday, April 8th, 2012. This is the organization started by Gretta Parker which was inspired by her bunny Flopsy Parker, who passed on to over the Rainbow Bridge on December 28th, 2011. This organization helps other bunny organizations which either rescue rabbits and/or educate them. New Etsy Shop Naming Contest

Hi There,

Time to have a new contest!

I am starting an Etsy shop which will feature rabbit and non-rabbit related jewelry, art work, other items and perhaps the occasional vintage item.  Every month I plan on donating an amount of money from each sale to a rabbit related organization such as ones that help rescue rabbits, educational organizations and the like that are non-profit. My problem is in coming up with a name.  The contest is basically whoever can think of the best name for the shop, which will be solely decided by me, will receive a pair of rabbit earrings made by me. I'm looking for something creative sounding that is related to bunnies/rabbits, but not limited to rabbits.

This contest will end at 8pm EST on Saturday, March 17th, 2012.  You can enter as many times as you like. You should include an e-mail address I can contact you at and a snail-mail address that I can send your prize to.  Your information will not be shared with the public and will not be used for any other purpose than this contest.
