The 14th Day of Christmas: The Bunnies of Christmas

It's a pleasure to be sharing in this special blog share, The 25 Days of Christmas,  started by the Parga's Junkyard Blog. I hope you check out the other blog posts sharing the holiday season with 24 bloggers who have joined forces to make this season a bit more magical..

25 Days of Christmas

 The Bunnies of Christmas...

Often the Holidays can be a difficult or lonely time for those who have no family or friends nearby, or are left behind because it is difficult to manage having one come to visit for a holiday visit-perhaps due to constraints of illness.  Or sadder still, whether through ill family relations or neglectful family, the elderly or disabled family member is left behind.
It is usually difficult for an elderly or sick person in a nursing home, hospital, or assisted living facility, who receives few or no visits, to watch others receive visits or go out during the holiday season.  I have seen this first hand, having worked in nursing homes, a rehab hospital and mental health facility for about 18 years. Even the smallest gesture is appreciated by these people and can mean a lot.

On the other hand, the warmth of a hug, for example, is nice when given by perhaps a staff person or visitor from a church, it is not always the same as when these people participate in interactions with animals.  There is something about animals, that for most people will let them feel even more relaxed and free to enjoy the interaction than with people they aren't as familiar with. Often times the results are amazing!

For years, I have participated in pet therapy programs with various animals owned by facilities or more often with bringing in my own houserabbits (litterbox trained and all!).  Come share this recent holiday season visit at an assisted living facility and feel the holiday magic yourself with the bunnies of Christmas!

A group was already assembled when we arrived.  Two bunnies, Grumbellina, a diva, a six year old not-so-mini Mini Lop breed and a male Angora (trimmed down) named Goldilocks (we thought he was a girl at first! And he was so pretty!) went with me to participate in the visit to my mother-in-law's assisted living facility.
We let Goldilocks have the run of the room for he is quite social and good at making the rounds! One lady was quite taken with Goldilocks and at one point, with my help, scooped him up to hold him, which is something he loves! I gave raisins to a few ladies who were interested in giving one to Goldilocks as he made his rounds about the room.  A couple of ladies felt frustrated that he wouldn't take raisins right away, but he eventually did and he pleased his public!

Grumbellina, the black and white diva made the rounds with me visiting with people who held her or wanted to pet or touch her, depending on their comfort level.

During the holiday season, these visits can make an extra special difference because of the instant unconditional love and rapport most people seem to have with the rabbits.  It is special because it is a two way interaction that brings about the the touch, the socialization among the human peers and with the rabbits.  Bunny visits are also special during great one on one.

It is often done in a resident's or patient's room for loners or perhaps bed-ridden people.  It also makes a setting less clinical or institutional. It makes it feel more like home.

During this visit, we also answered questions about rabbits, which brought about much laughter. The visiting continued while the facility person passed out some "Eggnog bars" they made earlier in the day.
Still, like with people, we can all feel a little tired and welcome a little private space with a bit of quiet time to ourselves.  This is one reason, it is a good idea to bring more than one rabbit during visits with more than a few people. The rabbits can take breaks and also share the "workload". Grumbellina didn't want to visit as much on her own, making as many rounds as Goldilocks did, after being held. She visited a bit then ran away for some privacy under a chair.

The bunnies and the people seemed to truly enjoy their visit.  The bunnies enjoyed some extra special treats as reward for their work and a bit of quiet time if they wanted it when they went home.

This special time makes the people the bunnies visited feel more like the special people they really are.

Thank you for sharing this visit with us!

Mary Ellen

Bunnies In Baskets Interview

Hi there,
Thanks for stopping by! I am very happy to be sharing this wonderful interview with Sarah Baran of the organization Bunnies in Baskets.  Sarah is Executive Director of Bunnies in Baskets and here to share all about Bunnies in Baskets with us.

RS:  Hi, Welcome to Rabbit Slippers...I am  happy to have you with us to share about Bunnie-in-Baskets. Could you tell us a bit about Bunnies-in-Baskets?
BIB: We are a 501(c)3 that trains Visiting Rabbit Teams (human and rabbit OR bonded pair) and provides community humane education.
RS:    How and when did Bunnies-in-Baskets start?
BIB: I wanted to take my bunnies on visits and didn't want the "rules" of the dog-oriented organizations.  I started BIB because bunnies are NOT dogs----and we can structure ourselves accordingly.  (Bunnies don't get vaccines, etc.....don't need collars.....)

RS: Was there a certain inspiration for Bunnies-in-Baskets?
BIB: I was in a national organization with my dog and loved every minute. However when I wanted to visit with my rabbits, it was all rules, rules, rules and nobody seemed clear about them or had experience with a rabbit.  I wanted to create the organization and program I needed.

RS: You like to bring Adopted Rabbits in your program, correct? Do you adopt based on certain criteria for your program?
BIB: Many BIB rabbits have been adopted or are currently in foster care. Spaying/neutering is recommended, but not required.  What we do need are certain personality traits----rabbits that are "human curious" and enjoy petting are great candidates.

RS:  Do you train the bunnies and/or your volunteers?
BIB: Yes.  We have a comprehensive online training class of readings, evaluation and practicum activities.  The vet certifies the health and temperment of each rabbit and BIB registers each team.

RS:     Can you tell us a bit about that?
BIB: What is most important is learning to read your rabbit's language.  We must always put the animal's needs first---we are asking a lot of them.  The practicum activities offer great operational insight in measured doses.  We offer feedback, support and lots of resources!

RS:    Do you have volunteers that  bring in their own bunnies also?
BIB: Yes---mostly it is a person with their own bunnies.  We do have an affiliate membership available for organizations.  We are an international organization---USA and Canada.
RS:   Who takes care of the bunnies?
BIB: The person who owns them.

RS: What types of places do you visit with bunnies? Do they have any restrictions?
BIB: No---hospitals, schools, nursing homes,etc.....  We offer excellent insurance to our Visiting Rabbit Teams.

RS: What guidelines do you follow?
BIB: http://www.avma.org/issues/policy/animal_assisted_guidelines.asp

RS: Do you support other organizations or recommend any for any purposes?
BIB: We informally support the House Rabbit Society and their state affiliates.
RS: Can we meet some of your bunnies?

BIB:We have too many to count!  However, please visit our website and thereare tons of pictures!

RS: You have a store that helps support your program-please tell us more info how we can support your program?
BIB: Please come and visit at http://www.bunniesinbaskets.org/store.html ----have some fun, and buy something useful and good for people, bunnies and the world!

I would really like to thank Sarah Baran for taking the time to share with us about Bunnies in Baskets!  You have me thinking of even starting an affiliate chapter here! Having done bunny visits, I know how special it is to the recipients and the volunteers! There is something magic that takes place.

Meet Boris the Bunny of Critterqueen's Rabbit Rescue

 Hello,
Welcome to Rabbit Slippers Blog! I would like to introduce Boris the Bunny, a sweet guy from a small Rabbit Rescue in Washington State.  Please get to know a bit about him and the Rescue he is at!

Rabbit Name:Boris

Rabbit Rescue Name:Critterqueen's Rabbit Rescue

Boris is a Pure Black Satin Breed Bunny Rabbit that was just Neutered, a Medium Size Bunny ready to Hug.

Age: About 1 year old.

History: Borris was turned in by his family, as they had to move and were not being able to take with them. This family really wants  Boris to get a really good home.  He used to be a very nervous bunny, but has  settled down quite nicely and loves to be held and snuggled

About Us: Our name is Critterqueen's Rabbit Rescue and we are in Maple Valley, WA----We are a privately run Rescue.  We are small and rely on donations and volunteers to keep it going.  We will take just about any bunny in for any reason.  Foster homes are helpful when we have babies that need loving or just have too many bunnies.  Our needs mainly consist of enough people to be sure the bunnies have clean cages and plenty of food and water.

Links: Facebook, Petco in Covington, WA, Reber Ranch in Kent, WA,   word of mouth

Events:   We are at Petco a few times a month and Reber Ranch several times a year.  We also participate in any adoptions or pet paloozas that we are invited to.  I will try and keep you up to date on those.  They will definitely get posted on our FB page.

Contact: jannjaa@yahoo.com or critterqueen22@aol.com  (Martha Blake who runs the Rescue)
Adoptable Rabbits Links/List: We will be posting them on FB.
Let me know if you wish to take them off there or I should email them to you.

An Additional Thought from Critterqueen's Rabbit Rescue:  "Bunnies are very special and misunderstood little creatures.  They truly do make wonderful pets."

Thank You to Critterqueen for providing this information. Please go check them out on Facebook for lots more information!

Having an empty nest can make the holiday season not quite as festive as it was when the kids were growing up. It has now become an annual event that is not only a low-country tradition but also assures the nest won't be empty during the holidays!

Join me at Empty Nest for a Christmas celebration that began once our nest became empty three years ago.
