Flower Power for Bunnies!

I have meaning to share this wonderful fundraiser that has been going on for a bit already and is going on til near the end of April. Hoping that the wonderful House Rabbit Network will forgive my delay in posting about this. Several people, upon my request, from the House Rabbit Network shared information about Flower Power for Bunnies and their organization!

Flower Power is in this case not the 1960s experience, but probably just as sweet and pretty as the flowers they wore in their hair, embroidered on their clothes and painted on their cheeks in San Francisco. Flower Power for Bunnies is a fundraising event for the House Rabbit Network

About House Rabbit Network

Our web site is filled  with all sorts of great info from medical advise, to adopting our rabbits and how to deal with common rabbit problems.
http://www.rabbitnetwork.org/
We have a facebook page www.facebook.com/pages/House-Rabbit-Network/
Our organization needs your help. For every purchase made on this site Flower Power Fundraising will give 50% back to House Rabbit Network.

A Personal Message from the Campaign Manager

The House Rabbit Network’s mission is to rehome rescued rabbits to loving, indoor homes, as well as educate the public about how to care for them properly and responsibly. We are a network of foster homes and have many great bunnies looking for their forever home. Recently, the number of rabbits in our care has grown significantly. Many of these rabbits have needed to be spayed or neutered and some have required additional medical attention. Please consider helping us continue to care for these rabbits and spread the good bunny word while adding some color to your garden!

Last Few Days: Bunny Burrow Boutique Purchases Help Baskets for Bunnies

Hi there,

Just wanted to let you know there are only a few days left to have your purchase at the Bunny Burrow Boutique make a donation to Baskets for Bunnies. For each item purchased a dollar is donated to Bunnies in Baskets. In other words, let's say you  purchase one bracelet and two pairs of earrings, that is three items which will equal $3.00 (US Dollars) that gets donated to Baskets for Bunnies. Every month, Bunny Burrow Boutique donates to a different organization.

Bunny Burrow Boutique is a shop which sells handmade jewelry (and other items soon to come) which often features rabbits, other animals, nature related and symbols of peace and harmony with the world and nature. The jewelry is very attractive with a variety of different styles, but is also created to be reasonably priced and very comfortable to wear. New items are added regularly. The Bunny Burrow Boutique can be found at this link (Click here). Also, please note that every month donations are made from each purchase to a different rabbit organization and there is free shipping on all jewelry purchases!

Flopsy Parker

Flopsy Parker

Baskets for Bunnies is a great non-profit organization which raises money and collects other types of donations (supplies for example) which help out rabbit rescues, shelters and educational rabbit organizations.  This organization was started by Gretta Parker, who was inspired by her own rabbit Flopsy Parker.  Information can be found at these links (click here and click here). Gretta Parker is also starting a rabbit sanctuary for rabbits that have special needs (physical, medical, special care, etc). She has recently taken in her first rabbit for it. She has also recently written a children's book, The Easter Bunny Who Grew Up. This book was inspired by her rabbit Flopsy and tells his story.

The donations for Baskets for Bunnies will go to them on purchases made until and on April 8th, 2012 (Easter Sunday) until the end of day (EST). Then the donations will be going to another organization on purchases made starting the day after.

Flat Bonnie Is A Year Old! Birthday Interview!

RS: Hi, I'd like to introduce a special guest today who has granted us another exclusive interview! It's none other than everyone's favorite flat rabbit.....Flat Bonnie!!

How are you today Flat Bonnie? Welcome again to Rabbit Slippers Blog! We are very excited to have you here again!

FB:  Hello, I am so hoppy to be here.  Thank you for having me on your buntastic blog again.

RS: We understand that it's a very special time of year for you!  Now, of course there is Easter (which we will touch upon later), but we understand there is something else! What is it and please tell us about it?

The Birthday Girl & Flat Cavy Friend

FB:  I just had my first birthday!  I am 1 year old now.  For a year now I have been working hard to help raise money for and help bring awareness to small animals in rescue centers around the world.

RS: Congratulations! Happy Birthday! Are you doing anything special to celebrate your birthday? Please tell us about it!

FB:  I am having an online photo contest for humans to post their favorite Flat Bonnie photos.  There are Flat Friend's all over the world and I want to share pictures of them having fun with their Furever families.

RS: It's been a while since we spoke with you. From what I understand, there's a Flat Bonnie animation and other new Flat Bonnie products for sale.  Please tell us a bit about them!
Flat Bonnie Animation

Head Tilt Bonnie
FB: My first short animation is on Youtube now, it is called Bunny Thump (click here for link) !  In the video I am helping out some of my friends.  My humans also made some Shrinky Dink fridge magnets of my Flat Friends and I that are on Etsy now. There will also be buttons, stickers and t-shirts soon.
BunGoyle
Capybara

There are some new Flat Friends too, like BunGoyle, BatBun, Capybara, Oaty and Timmy the Hay Bales and a few others.  There is also a “head tilt” bun option available now.

Flat Bonnie, Hay Bales, Oopsy & Poopsie

Batbun

RS: Of course, as I think of your birthday, it brings us back to when you first were on the scene around this time last year...you came right out with a message because it is right near the time of year which gives rabbits a spotlight in many countries. That's right, Easter is around the corner. When I adopted my first Flat Bonnie, it was an adoption, not a purchase! Flat Bonnie made herself available to not only bring joy to those who love bunnies, but also had a message! What is that message?

FB:  Easter is a bad time of year for buns.  Most bunnies bought at Easter die or are abandoned before their first birthday.  Many of those Easter bunnies end up in rescue centers, saved from city shelters that can no longer care for them.  These buns have been abandoned by their humans and need someone to love them.  Buying bunnies from pet shops only encourages more careless breeding and results in abandoned and neglected buns.  I want humans to know that “Adoption” should be considered when they are ready to make a long term commitment to a “Real” bun.  Many people do not know that there are hundreds of loveable, adoptable buns in shelters and rescue centers waiting for someone to adopt them and take them to their Furever home.

RS: I understand that you have an online poster to share with us about your message to people. Please tell us about it.

FB:  I used a picture of me at a picnic and made it into an online poster.   It says “Real animals are not Easter toys.” It also reminds people that rabbits are a 10+ year commitment.

RS:  We understand that there are about 800 Flat Bonnies and Flat Friends all over the world carrying the message of Flat Bonnie! What do you think of all this?

FB: I think it is Pawesome.  Just think of all those humans having fun with their new friend.  Also, the more people that learn about adoption, the better it will be for real buns everywhere.

RS: So right now there is a photo contest (Click here for info on contest) going on to help celebrate Flat Bonnie's first birthday? Please tell us a bit about that!

FB:  I want happy humans to take pictures of their adopted Flatties and share them with the world.  There will be Buntastic prizes for the funnest photos.  If you do not have your own Flat Bonnie yet, you can draw a pawsome picture of Flat Bonnie and send it in.  After the contest is done, I will put together a “First Year” slideshow video featuring some of the pictures that were sent in.

RS: I took photos of my first Flat Bonnie when my husband and I went out for Chinese food. It had Flat Bonnie drinking tea.  Later, with our blessings, when Flat Bonnie joined us on our 10 year anniversary honeymoon at the Rabbit Hill Inn, Flat Bonnie made so many friends and seemed like a great addition to the Rabbit Hill Inn family, that we let her stay. She was welcomed with open arms. We also took many photos of her there! My husband and I weren't the only ones excited about Flat Bonnie, there were others who took photos of her too in different places.  Do you have any favorites or favorite places? I think you have given that traveling gnome a hop for his money!

FB:  I really liked those pictures at the Rabbit Hill Inn.  Some humans have sent in Flat Bonnie photos from their vacations in Hawaii, the Bahamas and Washington DC.  I also like photos that rescue centers post with their Flat Bonnies.  I just really like to see my Flat Friends having a good time and enjoying their new life.

RS: Please tell us more about what happens to real live bunnies at Easter time. What is your message to people about them? What is it that you offer to people to help real bunnies?

More friends: Capyabra, Hedgehog & Skunk!
FB:  Most animals bought on impulse at Easter, do not live to see their first birthday.  Many of them are abandoned soon after the holiday.  Before going to a pet store, humans should first take their children to a shelter or rescue center so they can see, pet and love buns there.  They will be informed on what it takes to care for a real bun, and then they can adopt one of those loving buns who have been abandoned.  There are too many buns that need to be adopted.
Batbun in front of the Bat Cave from TV's Batman! All we need is Rob-bun!

RS: Do you have any links, websites, info etc you would like to add?

FB: Don’t forget join me on my Facebook page.  Also, I have a Flickr photo group (Click here for link) where you can post and see photos of my Flat Friends and me around the world.

RS: Do you recommend any websites where people can get more info on Flat Bonnie, organizations to learn more about house rabbits, adoption, what happens to impulsively bought Easter gift bunnies (and other animals too like baby chicks)? Do you work with any other organizations?

FB:  To find out about Flat Bonnie and Friends, you can go to Flatbonnie.com.  For information on proper rabbit care, please visit the House Rabbit Society website (Click here for link).

Thank you for having me on your blog again.  It was pawsome talking to you today.

RS: It was so bunderful to have you here! Thanks for coming back and sharing your exciting news! I hope everyone checks out  Flat Bonnie's links to see all the neat stuff that is going on!

Winner of the Rabbit Adoption Story Contest...

I love all the stories that people entered in the Rabbit Adoption Story Contest.  They brought tears to my eyes as I read some of the sad situations some had come from and the extents people went through to bring these rabbits into their homes as loved members of their families.  They are so inspiring and I hope people share them from here and will also continue to share stories of bunnies that have come their way into their lives.  I have re-read these stories as I have tried to monitor how the contest was going. One positive thing was that there have been many more people going to the pages than there were votes. Although I'm pretty disappointed more people didn't vote, there were actually many, many views on stories, which I will take as that most of those people read them!  This to me means that the word is getting out. I will continue to post the stories on Facebook and other social media to keep them all going!  The message will continue to get out there!

Thank you to all of you who took the time to write, gather photos and contribute their photos! It is very much appreciated. Thank you even more for having taken care of those Long-earred Loved Ones!  I am glad that I didn't have to decide which story was the best because it would have been so difficult.  I used to think that when people said that type of thing they were just being nice to make people not feel bad, but honestly, it's true, so very true- it would have been such an extremely difficult decision to make.

Okay, I know you are all waiting to see who the winner is...(and if you didn't read the first two paragraphs, I want you to read them, because they are important!)!

Now, for real this time, the winner is:

"Eddie's Story" about the rabbit Eddison from New Moon Rabbit Rescue. This story was contributed by Sarah-Elizabeth Labelle.  Coincidentally, unbeknown to the other, the rabbit rescue that Eddie/Eddison came from also contributed a story  and the adopter, Sarah-Elizabeth Labelle, about the same rabbit! He must be a special rabbit to have inspired both the rescue and adopter to contribute his story!

So, New Moon Rabbit Rescue, who will be hearing from me shortly, has won a donation in Sarah-Elizabeth Labelle's name of $25.00 (in US Dollars) and Sarah-Elizabeth Labelle has won a bunny pendant I purchased from Lavender Rabbit Studios! Congratulations!

Thanks all to those who participated!  Your stories are wonderful and hopefully we have all helped make at least one bunny's life better through this effort!

Grand Opening Free Bunny Bracelet Contest

 Hi there,

As part of the Grand Opening Celebration for the Bunny Burrow Boutique Etsy Shop, we are holding a contest to win a glass beaded bracelet with a wood look rabbit bead attached. The colors of the beads are spring pastels (pale pink, pale lavender, and clear), nice for Easter or Spring, but can be worn anytime of year without looking like the wrong season. The bracelet has clear plastic stretch cord which is very comfortable to wear, as well as the bracelet itself lightweight enough to wear comfortably.

To enter the contest two things are required:

1) Click "like" on the Bunny Burrow Boutique shop's Facebook page by Wednesday, March 28th, 2012 7pm EDST at the following link: https://www.facebook.com/BunnyBurrowBoutique .

I am putting it at that date in case someone wanted to wear it for Easter or give it as a gift. It should travel by mail (at least in the USA) to get to its destination in time for the holiday.

2) E-mail a snail mail address for me to mail a prize to if you win. In a couple of contests I had trouble tracking down people to let them know they won and to have a place to send the prize to! This is why I ask. I will not use your e-mail or snail mail address for anything except the contest. I value your privacy as much as my own! You can e-mail me at rabbitslippersblog@gmail.com.

I will do a random drawing from the names of those who enter, send out the prize asap and announce it in the blog.

As an added bonus, since you made it this far down the page and didn't leave, you can get a 10% discount at the Bunny Burrow Boutique with the following coupon code: GRANDOPENING10  at checkout. (Don't use any spaces between the words or numbers). This offer is good until the end of day on Sunday, April 8th, 2012. Don't forget that part of your purchases help support rabbit rescues and related rabbit non-profits.

Thank you for joining us!

"The Easter Bunny That Grew Up" -A Book Review

Today I was surprised to find I received my copy of the book The Easter Bunny That Grew Up in the mail, having arrived earlier than I expected.  I was looking forward to seeing what it was like. I heard and read all this stuff about the rabbit Flopsy Parker and his legacy with his mom, Gretta Parker, having started the non-profit organization "Baskets for Bunnies". This organization helps out Rabbit Rescues and Shelters in many ways, where it is most needed. For further info on Baskets for Bunnies, Flopsy and Gretta Parker you can read more about them on other posts click here and click here . There you will find links that go directly to their pages as well.

This book is written by Gretta Parker and illustrated by Maya Tolliver. The book which I received is a very nice paperback edition, which has an adorable cover picture of Flopsy Parker, the bunny adopted by the book's author. The story is not written with simple words such as a first grader might read by one's self.  The story and words read from the rabbit's point of view, which can be very insightful to the child reading it,having it read to them or to anyone actually reading it.  One thing I like about this is that I believe a child (or anyone for that matter) can read or be read to from this book and relate to the rabbit's experience. A child can relate to the world of the rabbit from wanting to be loved and viewing their own world and coming to conclusions based on the limited experiences they have lived through.  The approach this book takes though also has a very reassuring tone in the upheaval Flopsy Parker, the bunny, experiences in his former life when he was known as Marshmallow and the transitions he experiences as he moves past that to become Flopsy.

Flopsy starts out as Marshmallow when bought as a baby bunny at a pet store as an Easter gift. He is cute and affectionate so the family are at first loving and affectionate with him. As time goes on, as with many holiday gifts, the novelty of the gift wore off.  Being able to see from Marshmallow's point of view, he is not a toy that may be set aside and perhaps luckily picked up later, the bunny is a warm, living and loving social creature that has feelings!  The story goes on as he goes on a car trip with his family to a place that he thinks might be the vet, but instead turns out to be an animal shelter. The story goes on to discuss the rest of his time at the animal shelter and after what seemed to be much time passing slowly and sadly to a lady walking into the shelter and bringing him home and the rest of his great history! I will not give it away.

The illustrations basically represent the parts of Flopsy Parker's life that weren't spent with Gretta, his human mommy. Gretta took high quality photos of him practically everyday, so those are what's used in his life with her.  Maya Tolliver's illustrations go perfectly with the tone of the book and the situations. They have a simplicity and mood that demonstrate some of the confusion and bewilderment the poor bunny must have felt at on the occasions portrayed. "Life is changing, is surreal and I don't know why. My whole world as I know it has changed and made me confused and insecure". The pictures not really being colored in fully or "solid" give the feeling of the transition and of watching from afar or as in the end, as watching over things.  They seem very fitting and have a great quality of not being overwhelming, but getting the point across in a clear comfortable manner easily digestible by a young reader.

This book is not your typical sugar-coated everyone-lives-happily-everafter story. It does have some heartache and difficulty, but also shows much joy that is true and real. It goes beyond fairy tale type stories and demonstrates the beauty of magic of love when one takes the time to look at and find the beauty in something or in someone!  It is a story of how the light from within can spark the flames of inspiration in many others exponentially for the good of others in this world.  There is no fairy-tale magic. It is the true magic of the spirit of love but in our world of reality.

The image I get in my head of this book with a child is that the child is being read to! The book can foster discussion between adult and child about animals, pets, life, what it's like to be an animal, are you ready for a pet, etc. It can help anyone empathize with the point of view of the animal. It is simple enough for a child to grasp, but sophisticated enough for anyone to appreciate also. This book can change the way one sees and understands things from our own narrow human points of view.  As a secondary benefit, this book also has a spiritual but non-denominational point of view expressed in it at one point which can be very comforting in discussing things such as the Rainbow Bridge.

I also like the fact that this book doesn't villianize Flopsy's former family, but rather show that they made some poor decisions. This book strongly encourages educating one's self about the needs of the animal before bringing a pet into one's home and to point out that it is a living creature that requires a commitment.  This book teaches lessons on how many things can become affected if one acts impulsively without thinking and becoming informed on the commitment you are making. I also do like the fact that at least they also didn't drop the rabbit into the woods, a park or the grounds of a farm like often happens. Rabbits are prey animals and domestic ones are not native in the USA, nor do they have proper instincts to protect themselves.

If you would like to learn more about this book or to purchase it you can click here .  The proceeds from this book go to support Baskets for Bunnies and the Flopsy Parker Memorial Rabbit Sanctuary. You can read more by clicking here also.

The book also lists many rabbit rescues and other related organizations in the back as a great resource as well for those who have adopted, want to adopt or are thinking about it!

I would recommend this book for children who might be at the age of thinking about wanting a pet. This is a good way to open any discussion for anyone of any age actually about taking responsibility before acting impulsively when it comes to impulsively obtaining a pet/companion animal. Rabbits are great companion animals but have needs and aren't for everyone. Any animal one brings in shouldn't just be thought of as, "I can just get rid of it if or when I don't like it."  The compassion and outpouring that is described in regards to Flopsy really did happen and continues to inspire and grow!
